He highlighted efforts to support urban producers, create new markets, and strengthen local food systems.
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently visited a nonprofit in Columbus, Georgia, that is dedicated to youth development and fostering the next generation of entrepreneurs, farmers, and community leaders. Accompanied by Congressman Sanford Bishop, the USDA secretary announced $145,000 in funding for the nonprofit, part of a $1.5 million grant awarded under USDA’s new Urban County Committee pilot program. The investment will support educational programming, training, and marketing efforts.
“Urban producers play a critical role in the agricultural economy,” Secretary Vilsack said. “We are committed to supporting all producers no matter their age or the size and location of their operations.”
The USDA has launched various initiatives, including the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities and the establishment of Regional Food Business Centers, to create new market opportunities and provide technical assistance to farmers and food businesses.
